Saint Francis and Saint Dominic in the Clouds with the Holy Monogram

Original drawing in pen and black ink on laid paper, framing lines added in brown ink, 113 x 75 mm. Francis of Assisi is recognized by his habit and the sheaf of lilies he carries. Dominic is identifiable from the star above his head, though he is dressed here as a Franciscan. The two saints were contemporaries in the 12th-13th centuries. Legend tells us that Dominic had a vision of a beggar who, like himself, would do great things for the Faith. He met the beggar the next day, embraced him and said, "You are my companion and must walk with me. If we are together, no earthly power can withstand us." The beggar was Saint Francis. In addition to wearing Franciscan habits, both saints here carry rosaries, an attribute of Dominic and not of Francis. Dominic also carries the banner of the Church, symbol of victory over death, not his usual attribute but totally in keeping with a scene in the clouds. The drawing comes from a large album of works by Novelli broken up some years ago.
