Aldegrever, Madonna and Child Seated on a Grassy Bank

Madonna and Child Seated on a Grassy Bank

Engraving, 1553, Bartsch 52, 116 x 67 mm., ex collections: Rev. Thomas Kerrich (Lugt 1568) and E. A. Paterson (L. 826a). A very good impression of this rare print, on laid paper trimmed on, in places just within, the platemark; the paper slightly discolored. Aldegrever did no less than seven representations of the Virgin and Child of which this one is the most complex. The flowering lily, growing here in a pot, is the symbol of purity and, more than any other, the flower of the Virgin. The rock, on which she rests her foot, is the symbol of the church.
