Solomon Building the Temple

"And it came to pass, in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the Lord." (I Kings 6). The chapter continues with incredible detail of the dimensions of the temple, of the materials used, of the manner of construction and the decoration, and concludes, "So was he seven years in building it." The engraver of this plate adds in the lower margin, from a presumably secret source, that 150,000 men worked on it, a figure nowhere stated in the Bible. A fine impression with good margins, the paper slightly toned with age.
