The Sudarium (Vera Effigies Sacri Vultus Domini Nostri Jesu Christi)

Etching and engraving printed on linen, ca. 330 x 245 mm. Fine impression with margins outside the presumed platemark (the impress does not show up on fabric); slight rubbing in a few places, old glue and a hole outside the image, but otherwise in fine condition. This 19th-century religious conceit was obviously done on linen not for the quality of the printing surface, but clearly to offer an additional resemblance to the original, preserved as a holy relic in St. Peter's. The legend of Veronica (vera - icon, true image) who wiped the sweat from Christ's face with her linen veil as he passed her house on the way to calvary and found the image of his features impressed on the cloth, is not in the bible but appears to have arisen in the early 15th century. In a different form it appears in Voragine's The Golden Legend.
