The Martyrdoms of the 12 Apostles
Complete set of 12 woodcuts, plus the woodcut cover and cuts by other hands, making up the 1549 published edition (the first) by Georg Rhau, Wittemberg, Bartsch 37-48 plus other uncatalogued cuts, 278 x 229 mm. sheet size. Good, somewhat over-inked impressions on brownish laid paper, the full sheets together with text pages, loosely bound together with string (probably as issued); some edge creases and tiny losses, minor repairs and stains. The additional cuts include the cover with small cuts of the Apostles, St. Paul (Cranach, Bartsch 92), the Creation of Eve and the Ascension of Christ. Several of the principal cuts are shown here.
