Christ's Entry into Jerusalem
Woodcut, ca. 1513 from the set Sündenfall und Erlösung des Menschengeschlechtes, Bartsch 17, Winzinger 42, 73 x 48 mm., ex collection: Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, duplicate (Lugt 789a). Very good impression on laid paper showing the borderline all around. Though all four Gospels relate the incident, only Matthew 21 and Mark 11 specifically mention Christ's riding on a donkey, a reference to the prophecy in Zechariah 9: "Look, your king is approaching, he is vindicated and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey."
