The Rest on the Flight into Egyp

Very good impression on thin laid paper, trimmed irregularly on or near the borderline and lacking the lower plate margin with the text; thin spots and ink verso. Scriptural reference to the Flight into Egypt is brief. Matthew 2 relates only: "So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, left that night for Egypt, where he stayed until Herod was dead." This laconic account was greatly amplified in various early apocryphal texts, and the theme of the Rest on the Flight -- with the Virgin and Child seated in a landscape, usually under a palm tree, and angels bearing food on a dish -- was a popular artistic theme during the Counter-Reformation.
