Eros Playing a Clavier and Emblems of Mars Hanging from a Tree
Etching and engraving, 1538, Bartsch 10 (as G. B. Ghisi), 123 x 88 mm., ex collections: Fürst zu Fürstenberg (Lugt 995, but without stamp); Christopher Hogwood (the late conductor and harpsichordist, not in Lugt). Very fine impression of this rare (only a single impression is recorded at auction in the last thirty years) and fascinating print on laid paper trimmed on the plate mark and outside the borderline; faint brown stain visible only verso. G. B. Scultori was the father of Diana and Adamo Scultori and was once thought, incorrectly, to be of the same family as Giorgio Ghisi (hence Bartsch’s listing of him and his children). Although he did work after designs of Giulio Romano, this and many others of his works are of his own invention.
