The Smith, Passage du Dragon
Lithograph, 1894, Way 73, Levy 109-110, Spink/Chicago 103 iii/iv, 270 x 170 mm. (sheet 342 x 245 mm.). Fine, lifetime impression on laid paper with good margins,
signed in pencil with the butterfly, from the edition of 34 impressions of various states; small paper losses at the corners of the sheet, far from the image. The subject, of course, is Parisian, the Passage du Dragon being in the 6th arrondissement. The Rue du Dragon still exists, but the Cour de Dragon and the Passage which presumably connected the two are no longer there. Whistler’s view of the smith’s shop is typically full face, which allows the multiple framing he so liked.
