Nakamizo: Heron Lifting Off

Heron Lifting Off

Original watercolor on thin laid paper, 400 x 275 mm., signed in ink. Nakamizo was born in Japan and came to America where he studied with, among others, Joseph Pennell. That made him, certainly, a competent etcher, and his etchings are in the collections of a number of American museums. But he was also a painter and, while the influence of Pennell is impossible to find in this striking watercolor, there is a personal style here that seems to span the gap between Japanese art and American Impressionism. Nakamizo was interned at the Topaz, Utah Japanese-American internment camp during World War II. He died in New York City.
