Mielatz: Out of Commission

Out of Commission

Etching, 1887, 400 x 590 mm. Fine impression, with the remarque of a stranded rowboat on a shore and therefore probably from a deluxe edition, on tan simili-japon with margins, laid down, signed in pencil; the paper evenly browned and a small puncture restored in the lower foreground. The image depicts the sailing ship Morningstar, Boston, moored on a sandbar, presumably in Boston harbor. The background shows a detailed skyline of the far shore with numerous docked sailing ships. Mielatz was born in Germany, arrived in America as a young boy and studied art at the Chicago School of Design. His early works are often country or shore scenes of New England, but later he specialized in urban views, mostly in New York City. He died in New York.
