Niagara Falls
Etching, 1887, 230 x 353 mm. Fine impression, with a remarque of gulls around a rock, on chine-appliqué with full margins, signed in pencil; the support sheet only time toned. The print is from Sangster’s etched magnum opus, the Niagara River Portfolio. Not much is known about the artist, but he did not have to travel far to get to the United States, having been born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Nor did he wander far from his source, as he died in Buffalo. The Niagara River flows between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and incorporates Niagara Falls in its course, one side of which, apparently shown here, is called American Falls.
