Two Fishermen in a Dory

Original drawing in pencil on laid paper watermarked J. Kool, 365 x 330 mm. Van Beest was born in Rotterdam, served in the Dutch Navy and, according to various sources, traveled in the Far East, Brazil, Patagonia and Iceland. He came to America sometime between 1845 and 1855, apparently impelled by having gotten a young Dutch woman with child – though one wonders when he had the time. In America, van Beest divided his time between New York City and New Bedford, Mass., pursuing his career as a marine painter and, in the course of things, giving lessons to William Bradford, who achieved some fame as a painter of Arctic scenes, and the noted Robert Swain Gifford. He died in New York City. As befits a sailor, the drawing, though rapidly done, is filled with the sort of nautical detail that would escape a layman. A handsome sheet.
