Etching and engraving, 1738, 470 x 625 mm., Le Blanc 240, Portalis & Béraldi 9, Bocher 70 ii/ii. Fine, warm impression on laid paper with small margins outside the plate mark ; pale foxing visible only verso. This is probably the most important single print after Lancret, of the eighty or so known. Lancret’s paintings were very much in the style of Watteau, whom he greatly admired, and he studied with Gillot, who previously had been Watteau’s teacher. Le Bas’ engraving reverses the composition but is otherwise faithful to the painting which is currently in the palace of San Souci in Potsdam, Germany, having been purchased originally by Frederick the Great.
