Madonna and Child by a Large Tree

Engraving, 1510-32, 129 x 108 mm., Bartsch N.D., Hollstein 5, Nagler Monog. 3, Passavant 13, ex collections: Wm. Bell Scott (Lug 2607); P. von Baldinger-Seidenberg (L. 212); G. M. La Monte (L. 1181c); Wilkinson, sale 1875. A fine, clear, but somewhat greyish impression of this extremely rare print, unknown to Bartsch, on laid paper, trimmed along or inside the plate mark but outside the borderline; a few pale stains and a small repaired tear at the left edge. The composition is original. The Virgin sits on a mound against a large tree trunk, nursing the child. Behind the tree is a stone wall and arch and through the arch one sees a city and the path to it and a distant landscape. Krug's monogram (with the jug) is on a tablet hanging from a tree branch. Apart from the relatively common Adoration of the Magi and the somewhat rarer Nativity, one hardly ever sees prints by Krug, who was a goldsmith in Nuremberg but a graphic artist of high quality.
