Whistler, Annie, Seated

Annie, Seated

Etching, 1858-59, 131 x 94 mm., Kennedy 30 ii/ii, MacDonald 32 iii/iii. Fine impression, printed with a light plate tone on laid paper with good margins. The sitter is Annie Harriet Haden, Whistler’s niece and the daughter of his half-sister Deborah and his brother-in-law Francis Seymour Haden. She was nine or ten years old at the time. Many of Whistler’s early plates focused on family and friends, although, around the same time, he was etching the plates of his French Set, which would bring him considerable critical attention. Annie, Seated is probably the most immediately attractive of the early, family etchings which, perhaps despite their original intention, have found a wide and appreciative audience.
