Saint Christopher
Engraving, 1520, 69 x 48 mm., Bartsch 10, Pauli 11 ii/ii, ex collection: Grace Pugh (not in Lugt). A fairly good but somewhat later and uneven impression of this rare print (only a single impression of it has appeared at auction in the last 20 years), on laid paper, trimmed on the platemark, which is visible in places; thin spots and a tiny hole patched. Barthel was a more daring and inventive artist than his older brother, but his engraving and printing technique did not come up to Sebald's and the brilliant impressions that one sees of the latter's are all too rare in Barthel's output. But one must appreciate the inventiveness of his compositions, the odd twists of the bodies, often the very subject matter. The usual portrayal of Christopher shows him carrying the Christ Child across the river, but the moment chosen here is earlier: Christ has not yet announced himself, Christopher is merely a seated traveler and a winged putto arrives with, perhaps, a preliminary announcement, and bearing the date. Odd and fascinating.
