Ornament with an Owl and Two Putti Playing Cornetti Arising from Cornucopiae
Engraving ca. 1525, 40 x 31 mm., Bartsch N.D., Passavant IV-292-272, ex collections: Freiherr von Lanna (Lugt 2773); D or Dr (not in L.). Fine impression, slightly rubbed (?) in the upper left corner, on laid paper with margins of at least 3 mm. all around. Virtually all the known Little Masters except Pencz produced exquisite ornament prints, but there are also many whose authors will probably never be known. This tiny, unsigned gem is perhaps closest to the work of Master I.B., another essentially anonymous artist, who at least signed his prints and who was once erroneously thought to be Georg Pencz.
