Frontispice pour « Les Zigzags d’un Curieux » d’Octave Uzanne
Other Images:

Etching, drypoint and aquatint, 1888, 232 x 172 mm., Bourcard/Goodfriend 172 i/v. A superb and wildly experimental proof impression, printed à l’essence, the central subject dark and with the texture of a crayon drawing, the marginal sketches pale and ghostly, on a sheet of old laid paper with narrow margins outside the platemark. The work, as the title indicates, was ultimately intended to be the frontispiece of Uzanne’s book, but only the cut-down central subject would be used for that purpose and Buhot’s earlier states, as always, were adventures in marginal commentary, in inking and in experimental printing.
Provenance:
Coll. H.B. (not in Lugt). Henrietta Buhot (for it surely can be no one but her) was the artist’s wife and widow, whose initials appear on the reverse of many -- but always particularly fine and interesting -- impressions of her husband’s prints, often accompanied by one of the Buhot family stamps. Henrietta Johnston, an Englishwoman, met Buhot on one of his extended trips to England and they married in 1881. They had one son, Jean, who, appropriately enough seeing Félix Buhot’s interest in Japonisme, became a noted expert and writer on oriental art. Henrietta died, apparently in England, in 1913.
