Etching, 1861, 175 x 235 mm., Delteil 98 i-ii/vi. A very fine and rare, early impression, difficult to distinguish as to first or second state. The sky appears to have been partially lightened as in the second state, but the scratches in Delteil’s reproduction of the second state are not here, nor does there appear to be drypoint on the cows. The impression is in dark brown on india-appliqué, before the plate size was reduced, and with large margins outside the platemark. Delteil remarks that both first and second states are “trés rare.” Early states of Daubigny etchings have a spontaneity and freshness that is absent from the reworked and more conventional looking published impressions.

Provenance:
Samuel Isham (Lugt 1402). Isham (1855-1914), an American painter, connoisseur and author of a history of painting in America, left to the New York Public Library his collection of about four hundred prints, on each of which the Library imprinted this stamp. The library disposed of duplicate impressions from their collection some time around 1920 or 30, some of the Isham prints among them.
