Engraving, 1534, from The Seven Works of Mercy, 55 mm. dia., Bartsch 58, Landau 61 only state b (of c). This is the first of the set of the Seven Works and also Pencz’s earliest dated print. Very fine, rich impression on laid paper and with square margins outside the circular platemark. Landau’s “a” impressions are with a dot between the word Speis and the following letter T. This is impossible to see in catalog reproductions. This impression, still clearly early, still shows the traces of the GP monogram in the right window, as do the “a” impressions. In “c” impressions it has disappeared.
Provenance: Graf Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg (Lugt 2669). Count Ludwig (1805-1865), with the later help of his son Count Paul (1835-1897) and grandson Count Heinrich (1861-1923) built, in Silesia, a staggering collection of German prints of the 15th and 16th centuries, including rare sheets by the Master of the Berlin Passion, the Master E.S., Schongauer, Dürer, Baldung and Altdorfer among others. The collection was maintained through three generations, the majority of it being sold in 1923 through C. G. Boerner, and the remainder, anonymously in Switzerland in 1948.
