Etching, ca. 1890 ( ?), 178 x 248 mm., Bliss 465 iv/ ?. Fine impression, one of only three proofs of this state, on old laid paper with a pale bluish sheen, with good margins, signed in pencil ; a few small, pale, brown stains in the sky. Despite the lack of a firm date, this is one of Legros’ later etchings, experimenting here with subtleties of grey and totally avoiding strong contrasts. It is all about the play of light on the trees, the water, the boat and the boatman on a grey day. Legros is seriously underrated today. The variety of his work and its often experimental nature is really quite admirable.
Provenance:
F. E. Bliss (Lugt 265). Francis Edward Bliss (1847-1930) was born and died in Santa Barbara, CA, but lived for many years in London. Around 1905, he began to collect modern British and French prints: Haden, Strang, Short, John, Whistler, Besnard, Forain, Degas, Lepère and Manet, but above all, Alphonse Legros. The catalog of his collection of Legros (over 2000 impressions), despite its lack of certain vital information (dates, total number of states, descriptions of states, etc.), is basic study material for any present or future work on that artist. Duplicates from Bliss’ collection were sold at auction in London at various times from 1913 to 1923, together with various paintings and drawings. The basic print collection was kept intact until 1923, when the Forains were sold to Keppel, who made an exhibition of them. In 1942, Albert F. Wiggin purchased the Legros collection, then about 1900 pieces, and donated it to the Boston Public Library. This impression, then, would be one of the duplicates previously sold at auction.
