Mecato Vecchio (The Old Market), Florence

Etching and drypoint, 1883, Wuerth 61, 270 x 224 mm. Superb impression on old japan paper with full margins, signed in pencil. Through its drypoint slashes and manipulated plate tone this early Pennell print shows a concern with dramatic light and shadow not often found in his later work. Dating from well before his involvement with Whistler, Pennell is completely his own man here and if there is an occasional crudity of drawing, it is more than compensated for by the sheer verve of the plate. The edition size is unknown, but the plate was destroyed and impressions of it are rare.
