The Old Clothes Market, Houndsditch, London
Original drawing in black crayon on tan wove paper laid down to board, signed with monogram, 352 x 465 mm. Renouard is best known for his wonderfully witty series of etchings Le Nouvel Opéra of 1881, but he was also an active contributor of drawings to Paris Illustré, The Graphic and other journals. Reproduction in such a publication may have been the purpose of this free but finished drawing, London being quite as exotic to many Frenchmen at the time as Paris was to dwellers in small-town England. Renouard, far better appreciated now than he was only a few years ago, was a wonderful draughtsman.
