Galley at Anchor in the Harbor of Messina (Sicily)
Etching, Hollstein 2, LeBlanc 2, 123 x 185 mm. Fine, strong impression on laid paper trimmed outside the borderline; an old red chalk notation at the bottom. The print is apparently quite rare, as are most of Casembrot's few etchings, the majority of which have to do with this same city. Messina, on the north-east coast of Sicily, is an ancient city, founded by Greeks ca. 1004 B.C., and particularly noted for its harbor. Ruled by Rome, Saracens, England, Spain and Italy at different times, it was the scene of the last stand by the German armies in Sicily in World War II.
