Adornment to a Crucifixion
Ink drawing, 1998, 160 x 120 mm., drawn over and in the margins of a woodcut by Hans Sebald Beham (1500-1550). The giant birds don't tip the scale of reason here so much as do the drawn extensions of the imperfections in the woodblock. The birds, in fact, seem a perfectly natural enhancement of the scene, because if there were not birds then there would be those other winged creatures, angels. Signed and dated.
