Panic at Catherine's
Ink drawing, 1996-8, 346 x 294 mm. (framed 537 x 487 mm.). This work is based on a red chalk drawing of the Martyrdom of St. Catherine by Luca Cambiaso (1527-1585). Instead of the solemn moments that may precede a death, or the very moment of martyrdom (as in the Cambiaso drawing), what is portrayed here is an explosion of commotion, post martyrdom, abolishing gravity and even escaping the ostensible borders of the picture. However, there is a chance to escape this vision of divine fury through the insert drawing of trees, a kind of window onto peace. Titled, signed and dated verso.
