Two Peasants and Donkey in a Forest Clearing
Etching, 1842-45, 270 x 171 mm., Béraldi N.D., B. N. Inv. N.D. Fine, rich and detailed impression, before all letters except signature, on chine-appliqué with large margins and with the blind stamp of the publisher Delarue & Cie.; foxing in the margins of the support sheet. One of Malardot’s frequent devices is the use of a dark foreground looking toward a lighter background or middle ground. Such is the case here with the more distant peasants highlighted in the clearing by the sun while the dappled vegetation in the foreground shows pinpoints of light almost as in a Samuel Palmer etching. The Bibliothèque Nationale Inventaire notes the impossibility of assembling a complete set of the etchings of Malardot as he kept no master set for himself and frequently cancelled his plates to re-use them for other images. This is one of the etchings lacking in their collection.
