Self Portrait
Other Images:

Original drawing in charcoal and white chalk on blue laid paper, signed or inscribed, 1890s, 312 x 238 mm. Verso: Head of a Woman, same medium, signed or inscribed; ex collection: Sylvan Cole, private collection. The features of the self portrait are the same as in the oil portrait of 1893, but the images are quite different and the two are probably not related except by subject. Carrière has used rough and uneven shading to cover one side of his face here, a device analogous to the obscuring, smoke-like areas of many of his lithographic portraits. A powerful image.
