A l’Opéra: Madame Caron dans "Faust"
Lithograph, 1893, 363 x 263 mm., Delteil 49, Adhèmar 52, Wittrock 39 proof of the only state. Provenance: Franz Koenigs (Lugt 1023a) but without the stamp. Wittrock describes three extant proofs; this is a fourth, on simili-japon, the sheet measuring 448 x 312, signed in pencil and with the red monogram stamp and with the number 40 in blue pencil at the lower left corner; the sheet has been mounted on a larger sheet of thin, laid china paper. The published edition of 100 by l'Escarmouche was on a smaller sheet (380 x 280) of wove paper and was unsigned though stamped and sometimes numbered. A superb impression in olive green in excellent condition. Additional differences between the proof and the published edition, not noted by Wittrock, include the outline of the stone at the left and top (with some slight addition of background shading) and a very irregular right side which is partially straightened in the published state.
