The Knife Grinder
Etching and aquatint, ca. 1920 (?), 302 x 224 mm. Very fine impression on simili-japon paper with an oriental watermark and good margins, but with no monogram or signature. The presence of a London “bobby” in the background fairly well assures us that the scene is in England, but does not prove that the etcher is British. Whatever the artist’s nationality, this is an exceedingly well-made print, the main figure beautifully drawn and standing out from the well-detailed but foggy background, the movement of the wheel nicely conveyed, the knife itself highlighted as almost the only bit of pure white in the print. And note that the grinder has a small natural horn encircling his arm – to announce his presence in the neighborhood. Why the billboard texts are backwards is a question, but it hardly seems to matter in the overall picture.
