Christ Feeding the Five Thousand (The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes)
Woodcut with old hand coloring, from Ludolphus Vita Christi, ca. 1520. Fine impression, though with a break in the upper borderline, on laid paper with full margins, Dutch text recto and verso, and well-managed hand coloring in blue, red, brown, yellow and green. Ludolph of Saxony (ca. 1295- 1378) was a German Roman Catholic theologian, whose Life of Christ was first published (it had previously been circulated in manuscript) in 1470 and which was republished, with a variety of illustrations, innumerable times. It was, perhaps, the most popular book in Europe for several centuries. Woodcuts from the book, and from other books of the 15th and early 16th centuries, while usually by anonymous artists, offer a wonderful opportunity to obtain striking early prints at a small fraction of the cost of the engravings or single-leaf woodcuts contemporary with them.
