Music (Plain Chant) Manuscript Fragment with a Grotesque Head

Other Images:

Original manuscript and drawing in red, black and brown inks on vellum, 115 x 360 mm. The Latin (and the manuscript) is beyond our abilities to decipher, but the work is clearly Catholic plain chant and the import clearly serious. But monks who did this sort of laborious and demanding copy work often inserted decidedly secular, and frequently funny, images, probably to break up the monotony of the job and possibly to break up the singers as they carefully sight read the music. We receive the benefit of knowing that not all was dark and gloomy in their lives.

Addition and Correction: The manuscript from which this fragment was extracted is not Florentine but English, specifically an antiphoner for the Use of Salisbury, dating from the second half of the 15th century, though by late in the century, in use almost throughout lowland England in non-monastic cathedral, collegiate and parish churches. The text and music shown belonged to the service of Matins, as sung annually on the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (25 January). The words “sine intermissione sitiebat” are those concluding the antiphon sung both before and after the second of nine psalms. The psalm, indicated here by the single word “benedicam” and an abbreviation “euouae,” made up of the vowels of the words “seculorum, Amen,” follows. This, in turn, is followed by a complete versicle and the opening words of an antiphon. We are most grateful to Dr. Roger Bowers, Emeritus Reader in Music at Cambridge University for the information, which has been condensed here.
