Pennell, In the Mist of the Morning

In the Mist of the Morning (NYC Skyline)

Sandpaper mezzotint, 1908, 254 x 325 mm., Wuerth 501, edition ca. 50. A very fine impression in black-brown ink on wove paper with narrow margins, signed in pencil in the bottom margin. Pennell was simply too prolific, and too much in awe of Whistler, to have produced many prints that could be deemed first rate. But this is one. The view is of the New York skyline from the river, filled with tugboats and barges. A bright mist cloaks the buildings and shows bits of black sky above. Despite the fact that Wuerth estimates the edition of this print as 50, it is rarely seen and has not appeared at auction in the last twenty years. It is one of Pennell's most effective NY portraits and one of his best overall.
