Piranesi, A View of the Temple

A View of the Temple of the Sibyl at Tivoli

Etching, 1761, from Vedute di Roma, 445 x 661 mm., Hind 62 i/iii. Very fine impression on thick laid paper with the watermark of a Strasbourg Bend and small margins, from the first Paris edition, which was also the first edition of the print; the usual flattened vertical center fold. The temple, which survives in almost the same state as when Piranesi saw it, is still one of the great sights of the Roman Campagna. Piranesi etched it at least three times in various views.
