La Chasse au Cerf

Etching, 1618, from the so-called Paysages Gravé pour Jean de Medici, 117 x 251 mm., Lieure 271 ii/iii. Fine impression on seventeenth-century laid paper with large margins, which shows only a tiny fragment of a watermark. This is, perhaps, the most attractive image of the set which, at one time, was believed to have been etched by Collignon after designs by Callot, but has now been established as the work of Callot himself. A different set of four landscapes, one the same subject as one in this set, has now been assigned to Collignon. While the etchings were made in 1618, the prints were not actually issued until a few years later, when Callot returned to Nancy.
