The Four Elements (set of 4)
Etchings, ca.1651-2, 85 x 202 mm., Bartsch 19-22, The Illustrated Bartsch iv/v, iv/iv, ii/ii, ii/iii, LeBlanc 126-129. The complete set of four with DeWit's name as publisher. Fine, silvery impressions on laid paper trimmed on or near the platemark but always with the borderline and full text, laid down on old paper with a foolscap watermark. The DeWit publishing house was active in Amsterdam from 1648 to 1712. Since these plates had been in the hands of several publishers before DeWit, the impressions probably date from about 1680. As befits Zeeman, all the images except that for Earth are sea scenes.
