Knot (Interlaced Cord Pattern with White Medallion)

Woodcut, 1506-7, 270 x 210 mm., Bartsch 142, Meder 276 ii/ii b (of c), Strauss 102, from 6 "Knodn". We know these pattern designs to be Dürer's because he records them in his diary of his journey to the Netherlands, where he presented a set of six of them to the artist Dirk Vellert. Dürer's monogram appears only on second state impressions, all of which are posthumous. The patterns are virtually identical to those of an undated set of engravings the original designs of which have been attributed to Leonardo, but there is no consensus about which set preceded the other. A fine, black impression on laid paper with the watermark of a double eagle (Meder 219? 1563-74) with thread margins or trimmed on the borderline, which is visible all around. A minor printer's crease, a well-repaired tear at the right, the borderline touched with ink where broken, perhaps a few ink touches elsewhere, very pale foxing. Overall, of fine appearance.
