The Martyrdom of St. Andrew

Brown ink and wash over pencil, 211 x 185 mm. Provenance: Unidentified collection. Fine, finished and typical drawing in ink and wash on thick laid paper. Andrew, apostle and brother of Peter, is bound to his x-shaped cross while two robed figures sit or kneel on the ground by him. Hall mentions the subject as found particularly in counter-Reformation painting. Andrew is the patron saint of both Scotland and Greece.
