Spleen et Idéal

Spleen et Idéal ou Le Fiacre aux Amours (Malevolence and the Ideal, or The Cab with Cupids)

Etching, drypoint and foul biting, 162 x 89 mm., Bourcard/Goodfriend 73 ii/iii. Fine, dark impression on laid paper with large margins; foxing in the margins. The subject is one that Buhot essayed in drawings and paintings as well as prints. Although not referring to one specific poem, the image evokes Baudelaire's Fleurs du Mal. The cab drives through darkness, a grimacing devil above, guided by good spirits to the light.
