Baptême Japonais

Baptême Japonais (Japanese Baptism)

Etching, with drypoint, aquatint, etc. in two colors, 1887, 217 x 132 mm., Bourcard/Goodfriend 167 ii/iii. Provenance: Daniel Bell (not in Lugt). Very fine impression with good burr, printed in two colors, black for the main subject, sepia for the portrait, on fairly thick laid japan paper with full margins, with the red owl stamp at the bottom of the image, signed in pencil and inscribed "dix japan seulement." Buhot made the print to commemorate the baptism of his son Jean, whose portrait lies within the oval. For it, he returned to the consciously Japonisme style of some of his earlier prints, a prescient act, because Jean Buhot, long after his father's death, became an expert on oriental art.
