Un Grain à Trouville

Un Grain à Trouville (A Storm at Trouville)

Etching, drypoint and aquatint, 1874, 160 x 238 mm., Bourcard/Goodfriend 122 iv/vii. A fine impression, with burr, before the published state with the letters, but with the number 276 at the upper right. The image area is time toned to a light golden brown, an age patina of which Buhot was enamored. The subject matter seems more typical of Eugène Boudin than of Buhot, but Boudin never etched such a scene nor is Buhot's composition derived from any Boudin painting or sketch. Furthermore, the evocation of weather and its effect on humans and animals is a constant Buhot preoccupation.
