Ducks in a Pond by an Old Tree

Original drawing in pen and black ink and watercolor, 1895, 270 x 423 mm., ex collection: J. A. Neuburg (not in Lugt), sale at F.Müller & Cie., April 24, 1900, No. 22. Rapid and fluent drawing, finished in watercolor and signed in ink, on board or thin wove laid down to board and lightly toned. Born just thirty years after Félix Bracquemond, Hoytema may be seen as his successor, though not his follower, in his fascination with and depiction of birds, especially ducks, and animals. Hoytema’ style rests on Art Nouveau and Japanese woodcuts and while he painted and drew independent projects, a great deal of his work is with book illustration and calendars, of which latter he made seventeen sets between 1901 and the year of his death. Although Japonisme is usually considered a French artistic movement, he is a prime exemplar of the style. Original watercolors by Hoytema are far from common on the market.
