Wood Nymphs
Etching and stipple, 1799, 164 x 223 mm. A fine impression in sepia on wove paper with good margins. Quite apart from his landscapes, caricatures and book illustrations, Rowlandson did a series of nudes, called “imitations,” but really light satires, based on classical paintings by such as Titian, Albani, Rubens, Boucher and Cipriani. The specific sources of most of these prints have been identified, but this one appears not to have been pinned down. It is possibly of Rowlandson’s own design in imitation of some of the others. Finely drawn and etched and with subtle shading, it seems likely that these prints, unlike most other Rowlandsons, were never meant to be hand colored (nevertheless, some impressions were – badly). This one is intact.
