Le Vixe
Etching, 1925-26, from Maternité, 99 x 150 mm., Kornfeld 67. A fine impression on brownish velin with good margins, most unusually, pencil signed. The total edition of Maternité was 765 unsigned impressions, all of them congruent with this one – except that this one is signed. So it may be a proof or simply an impression Chagall signed for a friend – as he was sometimes known to do when there was no pencil-signed edition. With the title, we are dealing with a non-dictionary word. There are two possible cognates: vex and vixen. There is certainly a lot of vexation going on here -- the lamp swaying, the chair flying to hit a man in the stomach, the bottle upended, the houseplant tossed on its side – and the apparent cause of all the trouble is in an enraged attitude and wearing skirts. Perhaps the cognates come together.
