Jetée en Bois dans le Port de Honfleur
Etching, 1865, 237 x 320 mm. Delteil 12 i/iii. A fine and rare proof impression before letters, on chine-appliqué with large margins; water stain at the lower left corner of the sheet, far from the image, and a few small surface dents in the sky. Jongkind was a Dutch painter of landscapes who spent most of his career in France, where he was a strong influence on Boudin and later the teacher of Monet. Even in this etching of 1865, we can see strong portents of what would follow with the Impressionists, and if one would mentally add pointillist color to this very image, the result could pass as a Signac. But Signac was two years old at the date of this etching. There is a painted version of this image by Jongkind, interestingly dated 1866, the year after the etching, and there one can see the closeness to Boudin rather than Signac. Regardless, Jongkind’s etchings, done mostly between 1862 and 1878 are important, both as harbingers of future developments and for themselves.
