A Dutch Greengrocerie
Etching, 1889, 100 x 88 mm., Hardie 237 ii/ii. Fine impression, from the cut-down plate, on laid paper with full margins. The first state, from the full plate (127 x 201), was issued in an edition of 50. In 1912, Short reduced the plate and printed a second edition of 500 impressions to be used as an illustration in his book Etchings and Engravings, published by the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. The grocery store is actually on an old roofed-over barge which is moored at a quay. The framing of the distant view by the roof and the supports is reminiscent of Whistler.
