The Head of Langston Harbour

Etching, 1908, 189 x 272 mm., Hardie 340. Very fine impression with lightly varied plate tone on laid paper with good margins, signed in pencil. Langston Harbour is on the south coast of England, just to the east of Portsmouth. Short’s take on it is direct and simple, accentuating and shading the water that runs up to the base of the old mill and, to add a small human element, including two men who lean on a railing outside the Royal Oak Inn. The rest is sky and water with a line of distant landscape, a boat and a single bird in flight to balance the composition.
