Old Quai on the Nith

Etching with foul biting, 1891, 100 x 150 mm., Hardie 268 iv/iv (published state). A fine impression, with manipulated plate tone, on old laid paper with full margins, signed in pencil. It is interesting that Short, through four states, simplified the plate, removing both boats and clouds and intensifying the foul biting with plate tone. It was clearly an experiment in a new direction. The Nith is in the lowlands of Scotland and flows south to Solway Firth. This view is at the village of Glencapel.
