The “Victory” Coming up the Channel, with the Body of Nelson, No. 1

Soft-ground etching and mezzotint, ca. 1891, 218 x 289 mm., Hardie 45 i/ii (after trial proofs). Fine, rich impression in brown, before all letters and before re-scraping, on textured wove paper with large, full margins. Short based his print on a rather slight drawing by Turner. He had gotten to just this point on the print (i/ii) when he proposed to consult the Turner painting for a better idea of Turner’s thoughts on the subject. The two were apparently quite different. The owner of the painting, however, refused to allow Short to copy it, and, after seeing it and making a few notes, Short abandoned the project. Twelve impressions only were printed, of which this is one. Later, Short returned to the plate and made some alterations based on his notes, making the print much lighter and adding the text, thus producing a second state. Comparison, however, seems to favor this dark, stormy one.
